Gameumentary is Looking for Features Writers and Video Editors (403 views)

Hello all,

Gameumentary is a games journalism outlet focused on long-form feature stories, reviews, analysis pieces and short documentaries. We pride ourselves in providing quality stories over quantity, and tackling stories most other outlets wouldn’t even think to cover.

We launched on January 1st, 2017 and released our first short documentary film in May. We are prepping to produce our next one in the next couple of months.

We expect Gameumentary to be a volunteer-only site for the first year of its operations as we work on building up an audience from scratch. For comparison, our last site, OnlySP, was able to reach 100-150K visits a month.

If you’re looking to gain valuable experience and be part of a strong team of writers looking to make a name for themselves in the games journalism industry, we want to hear from you.

FEATURES – Gameumentary is looking to add another features writer to the team to work on long form articles, Q&A interviews, and other creative projects. Feature writers need to have exceptional writing skills, good time management, transcribing experience, and the ability to come up with unique pitches for interesting stories.

These articles are extensive and cover a wide range of different subjects. If you like talking to new people and sharing their stories, this is the position for you.

This position will also have the option of taking part in our weekly podcasts, our main podcast and/or our Girlumentary podcast. Having a good microphone is necessary.

REVIEWS & ANALYSIS – Gameumentary is looking to add another reviewers/analysis writer to our team. A reviewer’s job is pretty self-explanatory. However, as an analysis writer, you’ll be working on projects like narrative analysis or gameplay analysis pieces where you break down the game’s narrative, mechanics, etc.

We’re looking to expand this section of the site to focus on a number of different topics. This could have you analyzing the open world of the latest RPG, character relationships, soundtracks and so on.

Reviewers will also be asked to take part in our Duo Reviews, a podcast-like format in which two reviwers play the same game at the same time, and then come together to discuss their thoughts on the game. Having a good microphone is necessary.

If you have a keen eye for detail and like to explore games in-depth, this is the position for you.

*Gaming PC required for this position. Please DO NOT apply for this position if your PC can’t run most of today’s games at higher settings or if you only own a console.

We are also looking for someone who can put together gameplay footage for video analyses and videos that highlight specific elements of various games. This is something that we used to do on OnlySP (example here and here) and would like to bring to Gameumentary. You should have a PC capable of editing at least 1080p footage, have editing software and, of course, be able to edit.

Please include video editing samples in with your application, ideally gameplay footage.

As mentioned above, Gameumentary is expected to be a volunteer-only site for the first year. Depending on our success, this may change.

Writers will be provided all the utilities needed to complete their work, along with access to a shared Steam account that allows all of our writers to have access to the review copies we acquire.

We are aware that “experience” isn’t much in the form of compensation, but we can promise you that you will learn a lot working with us. We’ll put your in touch with a number of different developers. You’ll have access to a strong team of writers. But, you will also be asked to hit deadlines like you would at any other publication and produce work that you want the world to see.

**Please include 2 samples of your work when applying. If you are applying for a features position, we prefer feature writing samples. If you are applying for a reviews position, we prefer reviews and/or analysis samples. Also, it would be helpful to include a brief, 1 minute audio sample of your voice taking about a game if you are applying for a reviewer position. (If there are any issues with this, please let us know.)

Applicants who do not follow the guidelines will be thrown out.

Please allow us up to a week to respond to your application.  We do not respond to every application we receive. Thank you.
